The trophies have been placed, the history books rewritten, and now it is set in stone that both the Panthers softball team and the boys Volleyball team are 2016 D-10 champions. The boys stormed the court and the ladies stormed the field after each of their wins.
The lads went head-to-head against the Cambridge Springs Blue Devils in Meadville at the House of Thrills on May 27. The game was a quick 3-0 sweep for the Panthers as the team celebrated its second consecutive District 10 gold medal. Senior Peter Mattocks racked up fifteen kills with four aces in the game and senior Luke Smith tallied an additional eleven kills. Mattocks said, “The experience was a shock wave because I got to win with all my best friends, and it can’t get any better than that.”
As for the diamond divas, the lady Panthers had the odds stacked against them when they faced the Union City Bears on May 30 at Penn State Behrend. The Panthers had previously played the Bears twice with losses of 7-1 and 7-3, but it was the Panthers turn to strike. The ladies secured the championship with a 5-3 win as senior Becca Siple had ten pop fly catches and freshman Courtney Hess had two strikeouts. Sophomore Haley Hess said, “The feeling of getting them back was ecstatic because we proved the haters and the people who doubted us wrong.”
It’s safe to say that Saegertown is getting after it.
The boys will be playing at Meadville against Deer Lakes High School at 6:30pm in their first state playoff game since the D-10 finals. The ladies will be playing at Penn State Behrend on June 6 against Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School time to be announced.
