Today isn’t just Pi Day for Saegertown High School. It is also the first day for the new extension period, which is a program designed to help build relationships between teachers and students, enhance students’ educational experience, and improve the attitude and culture of the school. Starting with today’s afternoon kick-off, extension periods will be held once a week, rotating from p.m. to a.m. activity periods.

As reported in the Feb. 17 issue of The Panther Press, plans for this program have been underway for some time. The teachers on the PLC Leadership Team have assigned each student to a group based on a number of factors. Any students who are unsure of their assignment can check the lists posted in the cafeteria.

“I anticipate this program to be the impetus for the positive change we need towards getting a more positive culture at Saegertown. I am absolutely 100 percent on board,” said Mr. William Hetrick, member of the Leadership Team.  He added that the purpose of the program is to give students time to connect with their school in any way they need.

“I think students should go into this with a positive plan in mind for themselves. What is it that you need and how can I help you?” Mr. Hetrick said.

Mrs. Kara Bechtel, who also serves on the Leadership Team, said, “I feel like it has the potential to be really successful, and I hope that students take this opportunity to really know the teachers and vice versa.”
