Advanced Placement classes have seen a large increase in numbers across the board at Saegertown High School. Last year 51 students took 84 tests, and this year Saegertown has 137 total enrollments in seven courses. As a result of the ramping up, students are taking and passing multiple AP tests. Based on last year’s testing, ten Saegertown students have been recognized by the College Board as AP Scholars.
Principal Tom Baker recognizes the importance of this achievement. “I think it is a great honor to have 10 AP scholars that did or currently call Saegertown High School their home school,” Baker said. The scholars were celebrated at the Homecoming Pep Assembly on Oct. 3 and treated to lunch from Hole in One in honor of their accomplishments.
There are several levels to this recognition. To be named an AP Scholar, students must receive a score of three or higher on three AP exams. AP Scholar with Honor is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. To be named an AP Scholar with Distinction, students must receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
Saegertown’s AP Scholar with Distinction is Gabe DeYoung. Glenn Ferry, Oliver Smith, and Dustin Steiger received AP Scholar with Honor recognition, and Kassandra Boyd, Kaylee Mulligan, Will Phelan, Max Ravenscroft, Dayna Woodruff, and Ashley Wenzel earned the AP Scholar status. Students who continue to take and pass multiple AP classes can earn higher levels of distinction.
“I enjoy the opportunity that AP classes give students,” senior Oliver Smith said. “It allows us to take our education one step further.”
