Amid the shutdowns and closings, junior Jane Hetrick has been working at the Saegertown Dairy Inn. Hetrick loves working the grille and serving food to her community.
With near to almost everything else shutting down, the Dairy Inn has received some scorn for staying open. “This lady called the Dairy Inn demanding to know why we were still open. She just said we shouldn’t be open because people are getting sick,” Hetrick said. “I would say we’re being very safe at work, though. The owner Tom Kirdahy is taking all precautions.” She mentioned wearing gloves and often cleaning the workplace.
Missing school has definitely been odd for Hetrick, both class and people wise.“I mostly miss band and tech because those are my favorite classes,” Hetrick said. She is enrolled in the Electronics Technologies program at the Crawford County Career and Technical Center.
Yesterday, PA Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera canceled all standardized testing for students in career and technical education (CTE) programs for the 2019-20 school year. These include exams from the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) and the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS).
This concerns Hetrick because, in her tech class, they learn two different things as seniors and juniors. “One year is digital electronics and the next year is analog,” Hetrick said. “This makes it tough because all of us are missing vital information we will need to pass certification tests.”
While not at work, Hetrick has been talking to her friends, watching a ton of TikToks, and organizing and cleaning. “I think I just miss the interactions with people,” Hetrick said. “And I miss my friends.”
