The Saegertown Panthers football team squares off against the Mercer Mustangs in tonight’s Homecoming football game, and the fans are pumped and ready for a victory.
Currently, the Panthers are 0-3, but the losses have been close, and Coach Wolfgang and company feel confident that they’ll find the winning combination tonight. His goal is simple: “I hope our offense comes out,” Wolfgang said. “And everyone does their job. Move the ball up and down the field. Defensively, we need to stop plays.”
The team does have two key players out with injuries: senior Zach Yoder, and sophomore Reese Wilkinson. “We have a couple players down. Nothing major,” Wolfgang said. “Just letting them heal, so we can use them in the future and not aggravate their injuries.”
Captains Sully Zirkle, Henry Shaffer, Blake Boylan, and Damen Rossey are ready to take the field against the Mustangs, who have a record of 1-2 on the season, with losses to Wilmington and Reynolds.
“Speed, surprise, violence of action,” Shaffer said in describing their game plan. “We need to contain their outsides and not let their backs run.”
Of course, with Homecoming comes some added pressure and excitement. “The energy’s going to be awesome,” Shaffer said. “The town’s going to be out there, the student body’s going to be out there. It’s going to be a great game, and we’re going to put on a show for them.”
Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at Canon Memorial Field after the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Updates will be posted @PantherPressSHS.
