Does liking one more than the other put you on thin ice with your friends?

Pennsylvania is home to many professional sports teams and even more high school and college teams that cover sports of all kinds. Some of Pennsylvania’s professional sports teams include the Philadelphia Flyers, The Pittsburgh Pens, The Steelers, The Eagles, The Pirated and more. Locally we have high school teams ranging from lacrosse, basketball, track, hockey, baseball, swimming, football, wrestling and the list goes on and on.
During the winter months sports become limited due to not being able to be outside, but don’t fear because new activities such as skiing, ice skating and snowboarding become available. One cold sport that is played indoors instead however is hockey. The closest highschool hockey team to Saegertown is in Meadville, professionally it’s the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The well loved highschool sport of basketball is also played during the cold winter months indoors. Even though locally basketball is most likely more popular for winter entertainment, is it at the professional level? We asked students which they preferred to watch and if they even watched hockey or basketball at all. The majority came back saying that professional hockey was more entertaining for them to watch.
“I have never been intrigued by the NBA even though I am a captain on the basketball team,” said senior boys varsity basketball captain Collin Jones “Instead I have always been an avid Penguins fan and grew up playing hockey.”
Hockey and basketball are both well loved but a common trend noticed throughout asking people their opinions on both sports was that on a professional level hockey was deemed much more interesting to watch. However on a mature level hockey is more difficult to watch locally for most, so most said on a highschool level they prefer to watch basketball.
“I go to more basketball games,” senior Joelle Jackson said “Because our school doesn’t have a hockey team.”
