On Saturday, March 9, the student council will be hosting their second annual Sadie Hawkins dance from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the gymnasium. The theme of this year’s dance is “Tangled in the Memories,” inspired by the 2010 Disney movie “Tangled.” Tickets will be on sale during A and B lunch from March 4-8, the presale tickets will be $7 per person and $10 per couple and all tickets sold at the door will be $10. If you are bringing a guest from another school, you will need to buy your tickets before so that your guest can be approved.
The Student Council has decided to host the Sadie Hawkins dance again this year due to its popularity last year. It has been held both years during the month of March as a nod to Women’s history month. The idea behind Sadie Hawkins is that girls make the first move and ask the guys to dance to defy stereotypical gender roles when it comes to dance proposal responsibilities.
Even though the original history of the Sadie Hawkins dance was based on a joke made in a long running American comic strip “Li’l Abner,” we have decided to reclaim the message to empower the women in our school to step up and switch the stereotypical gender roles that are implied during normal dance season.
“Between Claire and I last year, we helped a lot with the decorations and planning of the dance, and we wanted to do that again this year,” Student Council representative Camden Gjovik said. “Our goal is to get everyone involved to continue on and make the dance into a yearly tradition.”
