On March 8, Netflix released their newest movie starring Millie Bobby Brown.
“Damsel,” directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, was unlike anything that Brown has been in before. If you are a fan of fantasy adventure movies, “Damsel” will be right up your alley.
Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) is the heir to a struggling kingdom, so when Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright) of Aurea proposes a marriage between Elodie and her son Prince Henry (Nick Robinson), she feels that it is what she must do to save her kingdom. Upon arriving at Aurea, Elodie and her family are enraptured by the kingdom’s beauty and the kindness of their fellow royals. As Prince Henry and Elodie begin to spend more time together, Elodie becomes more confident in her decision to get married… that is until her step mother (Angela Bassett) comes to her late the night before the wedding to tell her she feels that there is something the Queen is hiding from them. Elodie feels that her step mother is being paranoid and decides to go through with the wedding, and everything goes perfect, that is until she is brought to the post wedding ceremony that is tradition in Aurea where everything goes wrong for Elodie. Her perfect Prince Henry and his family are not what she expected at all, especially when they decided to throw her into a pit as a sacrifice for the dragon that lives within.
I don’t typically enjoy fantasy movies so “Damsel” wasn’t really my cup of tea. I feel like I would have liked this movie more if Netflix promoted it in a different way. Instead of promoting the movie as a movie based around fighting a dragon, I think they should have made it seem more like a fairytale love story, that way when Elodie did eventually get sacrificed it would have had more of a shock value. In my opinion Netflix spoiled the movie’s biggest surprises in all of the trailers they released. If you are a fan of fantasy action movies, you will probably still enjoy “Damsel,” but if you are more like me, this might be a movie you want to skip out on.
