The 2024-2025 school year is coming to an end, which means the reign that this year’s student council has had will be over too. The time for the interested students in eleventh grade who are interested in government opportunities is here. The Student Council has a major role in activities throughout the school year. A few examples are the homecoming dance, pep assemblies, blood drives, spirit weeks, donation collections, and much more. A student government such as the Student Council is usually run by four positions. Those roles are President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The student council of this school year added two other positions. Those roles were known as Ads and Marketing and Grade Level Coordinators.
At the end of each year, juniors who are interested in becoming a member of the student council will run for a specific position. There are many ways to petition and run your campaign. A form of campaign that is mandatory is a video of the strength you have, any plans you have for the school, and a little about yourself that proves you belong to the council. Past candidates and officers have placed posters around the school, made videos to post online, and even used sweets as an incentive. There are many ways to run for a position, but there is much more to it than just owning the title. As a government that represents the students it is important to be able to coordinate with other students, teachers, and clubs. There are high expectations in being a member of the student council, being a part of such an impacting group is not always easy, but it is never impossible.
In a conversation with some of the student council members, many mentioned how fast time has flown by and how remarkable it was to be able to be role models for the student body. They all decided to share a few words of guidance.
when asked about their time in student council,
“It has been amazing working hand in hand with Ms. Scott and learning more about the funds behind the different activities I have been involved in previously.” Said Ethan Leytrick, the Treasurer of the student council.
“Overall my time in the student council was very pleasant and taught me a lot of things,” Camden Gjovik, President of the student council says. “It was a lot of work but I am going to miss it,” she adds.
For those interested in running for a position do not let anything discourage you from making a difference in the school. Being a part of an organization like the student government is a privilege for many, and it is encouraged to run for a position if you want to make an impact here at Saegertown High School.
