*This review contains spoilers for Invincible
“Invincible” is an adult animated show based on a comic series created by Robert Kirkman and co-created by Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley. Robert Kirkman is known mostly for his work in creating the popular series “The Walking Dead.”
The series is based around Mark Grayson, a teenage high school student who has superpowers due to being the son of Omni-Man. His father is the most popular and powerful superhero on Earth, and he teaches Mark how to use his powers. The reason he has powers is that Omni-Man is a Viltrumite, which is an alien race. Over time, Mark becomes the hero known as Invincible and begins protecting Earth like his dad, but he soon realizes his dad’s views and ideals are different from what he originally thought.
The show follows Invincible as the main character, yet it also has plenty of side characters highlighted. Throughout the show, Mark struggles with many issues dealing with responsibility and using his powers. Most of these side characters are other superheroes, such as Atom Eve and Rex Splode. All Mark wants to do is help, but he has to deal with the struggles that come with being a hero, such as balancing his hero and personal life, as well as the aftermath and the lost lives he fails to save.
Invincible is a very mature and sometimes gory show. There are many scenes where it’s more than just some blood being shown. This aspect makes the show unique, but it can also stop others from liking it. In our opinion, for the most part, it’s okay and fitting, but there are times when we feel it’s over the top. For example, in the new season of the show, there is a character named Multi-Paul, who has the power to duplicate himself as many times as he wants. There is a scene where he uses his powers to escape his prison cell by duplicating himself until the pressure is too much for the cell to withstand, in turn killing many of his clones. This scene is very over the top and can be very uncomfortable to watch. However, we also believe that the gory aspect of the show can also add to it; for example, in the final battle of the season, Mark fights a Viltrumite named Conquest. This fight is super intense and at times very gory, but in this case, it adds to the intensity of the fight, making it one of the best in the series as of right now.
Overall, the themes and intensity of the show are what make it so much fun to watch. Invincible now has three seasons, with another planned to come out early next year. All three seasons have extraordinary ratings, leaving no fan disappointed. The first season scored a 98%, followed by 100% scores on Rotten Tomatoes for seasons two and three. They have cast various famous actors to play the roles of not only the main characters but also the side characters who don’t get as much screen time. As the show has progressed, the viewership has gone up, leaving many wondering and excited for what the show has to offer in the future.
