Members of the Class of 2020 held table sessions in the cafeteria this morning to share their future plans with members of the sophomore class. The seniors complete the career research and goal setting project in Mr. Hetrick’s English class.
The project includes budgeting, preparing professional documents including a resume and cover letter, career research through PA Career Zone, and reflecting on what led them to their possible career choice as well as what lifestyle they hope to attain in the future.
“The career research unit is the most practical and applicable project I do. It makes graduation very real for the students. It ties the unreality of high school to post-high school life,” Hetrick said.
Senior Theo Smith, who plans to be a nurse practitioner, said, “I learned valuable skills to be able to present in front of people, and I think we should open it up to freshmen as well so every student gets to hear about these career paths.” Smith noted in his presentation that his mother’s career as a nurse inspired him to pursue this path. “My mom gives me a lot of insight about the nursing field based on her many years of experience. She talks to me about how nurses should treat their patients.”
This is the first year the students have presented to underclassmen. Hetrick wanted the seniors to have the experience of a live event. “I thought the table sessions were a good next step. It makes the presentation more formal for the seniors and gives the sophomores a good introduction to career planning.” Presentations will continue next week.
