Last Wednesday, April 30, Saegertown senior Cora MacAdam received some shocking visitors in the middle of Mr. Shontz’s third period AP Literature class. News anchor Eva Mastramatteo and a camera crew from Erie News Now surprised MacAdam with their monthly C.L.A.S.S. Act Emerging Leader Award.
The C.L.A.S.S Act Emerging Leader is awarded to one student each month from Northwest Pennsylvania. The acronym C.L.A.S.S. stands for character, leadership, attitude, service and selflessness. MacAdam is the first student from Crawford County to win this award in years.
MacAdam is incredibly involved here at Saegertown, both in and out of school. She is in the National Honors Society, Key Club, Math and Science club, Envirothon, and the Young Conservatives Club, and she has also found time to lead both the Campus Club and the 2025 Senior Class as president and treasurer, respectively. In her free time, Cora enjoys the arts as well as running for the school’s cross-country team.
MacAdam was shocked by the award, as she was not told in advance that she had won. The camera crew surprised her just as much as the rest of her AP Lit class.
“I was up on the stop and even felt a little flustered,” claims MacAdam. “It certainly was a good surprise.”
“It’s important to have balance so you can do things that are important, to serve others and show others the love of Jesus,” says MacAdam. “That’s important to me, but I also need my own time to spend with the Lord and to recharge.”
For a self-proclaimed introvert, MacAdam has no reservations when it comes to humbly serving others. She wanted to thank both Dr. Howick and anyone else who was involved in the selection process.
Along with her recognition on television, our hometown celebrity was also awarded a $1,200 scholarship. It’s safe to say that, with her humble leadership taken into account, this award was well-deserved. Congratulations, Cora!
